Breeders have developed these shrubs as a series, with the same characteristics but available in different colors. Check out these series below, and choose a color (or several) you like.
- ‘Sugar Tip’ is a mid-sized line of shrubs with unique cream and white variegated foliage.
- ‘Satin’ is a full-sized group with an upright form reaching heights of 12 feet. Perfect for a tall privacy screen of foliage and loads of summer blooms.
- ‘Paraplu’ is a hybrid with a less rigid form and larger blooms than other varieties. They reach a medium size of about 8–10 feet tall and 5 feet wide.
- ‘Lil Kim’ is a dwarf line of H. syriacus ideally suited for small spaces. They are compact and dense, with a mature size of about 3–4 feet tall. Try them in containers for a splash of color on the patio.

I live on the edge of zones 4&5. There is a stand of Rose of Sharon beside my driveway that has been there from before I was born, this was my grandparents' home, and it has never failed to return in the late spring. It doesn't start leafing until after mother's day but then it flourishes and has loads of flowers; with no tip die off. Yes, I have volunteers everywhere, but I just cut them back where I don't want them. My hummingbirds love them.
I have truly enjoyed my true rose of Sharon “trees”, however, they are huge pests, because they threw off so many seedlings. I’m seriously considering pulling them out and replanting with some kind of sterile Rose of Sharon. Curious if other folks have run into the same problem?
Yes! “Babies” everywhere. My husband just mows over most of them. I live in the country and transplant some, give them away. If I catch them the first year, they are easily pulled up and tossed in the compost. Worth the trouble to me.
YEs, I have two double bloom Rose of Sharons and I am thinking of ripping them out this year. I prune off the buds every year but was late this year and I have hundreds of seedlings, It is sooo much work to pull them out. I had different varieties in New York and never had an issue with =seedlinmg. Her is Ohio they are way too much work.
I love my rose of Sharon but whatever fertilizer I’m using isn’t helping. Can you suggest one for me? They are planted on a hill in clay. Thank you so much!
